Managing Directors, Chris Lanman, Scott Jones and Michael Chang are featured in The Deal article “Semis Could Be New PE Stalking Ground.” Software and technology have been a popular choice for private equity investments, but semiconductors have not been as easy to attract investors. Private equity firms have traditionally been hesitant to invest in the semiconductor industry due to the sector's shorter product lifecycles, high R&D costs, and troubled buyouts in the past. However, with the introduction of the Chips Act and increased interest in semiconductors for automotive, aerospace, and defense applications, private equity firms are starting to see potential opportunities in the industry.
“As we've moved into a new era of growth for semiconductors that's driven by mega trends around automotive and industrial IoT you start to see a revenue profile that fits with private equity. When you layer the Chips Act on top of that, these strategic growth areas of aerospace and defense, industrial and automotive are more attractive for private equity,” said Scott Jones, A&M Managing Director and Co-Leader of its Software, Technology & Services group.
“In the A&D [aerospace and defense] space, I'm seeing more interest in semiconductors and micro electronics investments than I ever have,” said Michael Chang.
“There are going to be a lot of opportunities in this ecosystem and not only for the largest of capital providers like a Brookfield or Koch Industries," said Chris Lanman.
